My Thoughts:

I'm not sure where to start with this review, simply because my thoughts are still processing and in a big mess. Don't get me wrong, the novel crushes you in the most alluring way possible. This is my first E. Lockhart novel and after hearing many readers rave about her books, I don't think this craft influenced me like many others. Even though I gave it 3.5 stars, it is still  benefits your time. The story was special, touching, and worth reading. WE WERE LIARS is clever and a mature piece of YA.

Like my previous reviews, I go deep into the summary. I will not for this review because it would be better to go into this blindly. So I will keep things short. The plot itself was intriguing, but the execution was not my cup of tea. The short chapters made it a page turner and very seductive. There IS a plot twist (which I'm still thinking about) that keeps you thinking. That's what I love about reading. There are always books that haunt you and WE WERE LIARS is one of them.

It can't be a YA Contemporary without a little summer romance. The romance wasn't anything special, in my opinion, but was very endearing. The characters are a whole different story. I wasn't very invested in them. I guess my connection with the characters wasn't as strong as many others. There was also a fairy tale aspect which was very fun to read.

"But the thing that makes me really messed up is the contradiction: when I'm not hating myself, I feel righteous and victmized. Like the world is so unfair."

Once in the WE WERE LIARS world, it's hard to step away from the story. The novel is not for everyone, but it's a great mystery. Many readers have cried, but I cannot say I have. I would recommend this book to readers who like a good plot twist. AGAIN, just because I gave it a 3.5/5 does not mean I didn't enjoy it. Mystery, YA, Plot Twist lovers: This book can surely win over many readers, maybe even you!

3.5/5 STARS

  1. That is definitely a teaser of a review. I think my daughter has this one in her room. I might have to steal it from her. Borrow, I mean borrow, not steal. ;-)
